Pre-Inked or Self-Inking Stamp
What’s the difference between these types of stamps?

Pre inked stamps are stamps that contain ink within the stamp die and do not require a separate stamp pad. These stamps give the highest quality impression, produce the best detail, and are durable and easy to use. There are 3 different types of pre-inked stamps – Gel, Flash and Laser Engraved.

Gel pre inked stamps are the least expensive of the pre-inked stamps and are made with Polymer and Ink homogenized together to form a “gel” and Vulcanized to form the stamp. Gel pre-inked stamps start out with a clean and clear impression that does not feather or bleed. Gel pre-inked stamps are available in a variety of sizes and are a great alternative for extra large applications. The limitations to the gel pre-inked stamps are that they can only be used on absorbent, porous surfaces and are not recommended for repetitive stamping

Flash pre-inked stamps are made with a stencil process that results in the rubber being covered by a thin plastic film. The Flash process is much quicker than gel or laser engraved and allows manufacturers to offer quick service. Flash pre ink stamps are not considered to be as durable as laser engraved pre-inked stamps, but do make good impressions and can be re-inked with an oil-based ink.

Laser engraved pre inked stamps are produced using laser engravers to cut away the lettering or artwork and create detailed and intricate graphics. The laser can also engrave at various depths for a more textured product. Laser engraved pre-inked stamps offer the best quality impression and can be re-inked with an oil-based ink. Xstamper is an example of a laser engraved, pre inked stamp.

The high quality impression of a pre-inked stamp makes it the stamp of choice when ordering logos and signatures because of the sharp, crisp detail. Pre-inked stamps are also ideal for large stamp applications because of the variety of size options.

Self Inking Stamps include a self-contained ink pad, which is replaceable or re-inkable. The stamp die rotates up into the ink pad between each use and makes a distinct “kerchunk” sound. It’s basically a regular stamp and stamp pad all in one. Self-inking stamps will give you thousands of impressions before re-inking is necessary. When the ink runs dry in the pad, you can either replace the entire pad or re-ink the pad with a water-based ink. Never use an oil based ink, as it will damage the stamp. Re-inking or replacing the pad is easy, simply apply pressure to one side of the pad and push the pad through the opposite side.

Self-inking stamps are ideal for rapid, repetitive stamping because the die automatically re-inks itself after each impression. They are recommended for bank endorsement stamps, and any other high volume application. Self-inking stamps are less expensive than pre-inked stamps, and give a good quality impression, but not as good as a pre-inked stamp. The largest self-inking mount size available is 1-1/2” x 3”, so it’s not an option for large stamp needs.
